Community Action is thrilled to welcome four VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) volunteers! As the brains behind innovative human services like Head Start, Upward Bound, and even the credit union system, AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteers aim to improve social services and build community by “Fighting Poverty with Passion.”
President Kennedy first introduced the VISTA Volunteer concept in 1965, and for the past 46 years, we’ve been waiting patiently for our chance to host these passionate professionals!
Starting in September, Apryl Green will search for improved marketing strategies to better communicate our message to the greater community. Amanda Smith and Ben Johnson will partner with agency staff and community coalitions to develop a web-based resource directory which can be used by our staff, other agencies, and those seeking assistance services. In November, a fourth VISTA will join the team to tackle fundraising and donor development.
State funder, Children's Trust Fund, awarded Community Action’s Healthy Families programs with two of ten annual awards! Hampshire County Healthy Families received the ‘Group Award’ for providing their participants with unique, creative, and collaborative community group opportunities. Franklin County/North Quabbin Healthy Families received the ‘Fatherhood Award’ for having most father involvement through home visits, groups, and special events.

Over 3,200 people received more than 14 tons of free, nutritious food at the Center for Self-Reliance Food Pantries in Greenfield and Shelburne Falls in 2010.
Nearly 13,000 of our neighbors live in homes heated with the help of Community Action Fuel Assistance.
Each year, volunteers donate more than 10,000 hours of their time to assist Community Action, from stocking shelves in the food pantry, to conducting family mediations, to providing tax assistance. From all of us to all of you, thank you!
